NEWTON-STEWART
DRINKING FOUNTAIN

At a special meeting of Police Commissioners held on Monday, a letter was read from Mr Alexander Waugh, intimating that a gentleman who did not wish his name disclosed was willing to erect an ornamental drinking fountain for people and cattle, surmounted by a gas lamp, in Dashwood Square, in the vicinity of the new McMillan hall, provided the Commissioners would undertake its care and lighting, &c. The Earl of Galloway and Mr Drew had seen and approved of the. sketch, and his lordship had kindly agreed to give the ground. The cost of the fountain would be upwards of £100. On the motion of. the Chairman the Commissioners cordially agreed to accept of the proffered gift on behalf of the town.
