NEWTON-STEWART
EXTENSIVE SALE OF HOUSE PROPERTY

The properties in Newton-Stewart and Creebridge belonging to the trust estate of the late Misses Marion and Jane McMillan were exposed for sale in the large hall of the Galloway Arms on Friday. There was a large attendance of the general public, and much interest was taken in the sale, as it is well known the greater proportion of the estate has been bequeathed for a public benefit to the town, and that a new Town Hall is to be erected, the site of which has already been procured at the corner of Queen Street and Dashwood Square. The articles and conditions of sale having been read, the first lot consisted of shop, house, and garden, 68 and 70 Victoria Street, rental £45. The upset price was £1000, and after a spirited competition was bought for Brown & Co., drapers Newton-Stewart for £1255. Lot 9 dwelling house and garden, 78 and 80 King Street, rent£7-16s, upset prime £120, for which there were no offers, and the sale was adjourned; but we understand it was afterwards bought privately by Mr Fernie at the upset price. Lot to, dwelling house and garden situated in Creebridge, rent £14. The upset price was £800, and it was purchased at that sum by Mr J. S. Robertson, the present tenant. We learn on the best authority that this last property was bought some time ago by the late Wm. McMillan for £135. The whole of the properties seem to have sold high. The whole realised £3.530. Mr John Thomson, Newton-Stewart, was auctioneer, anti Mr G S. Black, Wigtown, agent. Messrs Thos. Stewart, Albert Street ; Andw. McConechie, Mains; and Joseph Hewitson, Baltersan, the trustees, were present at the sale.
