WATER SUPPLY—MEETING OF RATEPAYERS

A meeting of rate-payers was held in the Victoria Hall, on Tuesday evening being on the requisition of a petition to the chief magistrate and commissioners. The hall was well filled, there being about 500 present. On the motion of Mr Peter McKie joiner. Mr McEwen, Chief Magistrate, took the chair. The petition having been read together with the names thereon. the chairman dwelt at considerable length on the proposed schema which had been attempted to be forced on the ratepayers, by sending a very spurious petition to the Board of Supervision. He clearly overturned Mr Thomson's 8d rate and showed that the rate-payers might expect, it to be more than double. At the close of the chairman's remarks there were resolutions proposed, five in number, and ultimately it was unanimously agreed that there be no gravitation water; and the resolution hating been signed by the chief magistrate and clerk was forwarded to the Board of Supervision the following day.
