NEWTON-STEWART
The LATE PETER STROYAN.

The Rev. M. S. S. Johnstone, Minnigaff, on Sabbath last preached from the text, Judges iii. 20--"I have a message from God unto thee;" also from Isaiah 1xiv. 6--"We all do fade as a leaf, and our iniquities like the wind have taken us away." The former text was the subject of his discourse on his induction to the pastorate of Minnigaff, and he has never since preached from the same text. At the close lie briefly referred to the death of the late sexton—Peter Stroyan. It was 40 years since the deceased had accompanied him for the first time through, amongst his parishioners, and he mentioned the route they had taken. At that time there were 120 or 130 heads of families communicants of his church; of these there were now only four living. The rev. gentlemen remembered having had the pleasure of saying to some of his friends in the south that the parish with which he was connected was larger than the county of Rutland.
