NEWTON-STEWART
FATAL ACCIDENT

A sad fatality occurred here on Tuesday afternoon to George, aged 18 years, second son of Mr William Thomson, baker. As is customary the bread is delivered through the town by means of a pony and van. The pony, being young, was not altogether fit to be trusted. George, it appears, was standing in charge of the pony at a shop in Queen Street, while one of the apprentices delivered the bread. The pony made to bolt, but was suddenly checked. It bolted the second time and had run a number of yards, when it struck against the lamp-post, George being crushed between it and the van. The lamp was knocked over with great force, and the van turned over on its side. The young man was taken into a house there; and Doctors Dickson and Clark were soon in attendance, and after examination found his injuries were internal and his case hopeless. He was conscious and spoke, but died in about 4 hours after. He was a young man greatly respected, and the melancholy event has cast s gloom over the town. The greatest sympathy is felt, for his parents.
