TO many people the silence of the night was broken by a company of carol singers, and to those 1 who appreciate Christmas carols and good singing it must have been pleasant. The residences of our leading gentlemen were visited, and the singers were in most cases hospitably received. High mass commenced at midnight at St Ninians. Father Wood officiated, and there was a large attendance of both Catholics and Protestants. During the day services were conducted at All Sainte Episcopal Church, Challoch, by the Rev. Mr Dorton. The banks and shops of those belonging to the Roman Catholic persuasion were closed. The mail arrived at the Post Office 20 minutes late, and by the time the letter carriers were despatched they were nearly three hours behind their proper time, owing to the enormous quantity of letters, &c. Books, parcels, newspapers, &c., were made a special delivery. The evening delivery was also very heavy. No additional hands were employed, although the work was unprecedented.
