NEWTON-STEWART
DEATH OF ONE OF OUR ENTERPRISING MERCHANTS

Many will regret to learn that after a brief illness Mr Andrew McGuigan, senr. died at his residence, 10 Arthur Street, on Thursday last, at the age of 54 years. In early life, and uneducated, he commenced business on a small scale, and by industry and perseverance rose to be one of the leading merchants of the town. For many years he leased the stables adjoining the Grapes Hotel, where he carried on the posting business, but more recently the Queen's Arms. Until the opening of the Wigtwonshire Railway he kept a coach plying between Newton-Stewart and Whithorn for the convenience of passengers, after which he contracted with the Post Office authorities for the conveyance of mails and passengers to and from Barrhill. He also established a cab for the accommodation of the inhabitants of the town, besides carrying on the business of grocer and provision merchant, and various other branches of business, and all with much success. He was widely known and much respected. His remains were interred in St. Ninian's Churchyard on Saturday, and the funeral was largely attended.
