ON Saturday the brethren of the "Gallovidian" Lodge of Odd Fellows celebrated their anniversary with a procession, after which athletic sports were engaged in. The event is regarded by many as a day fitted for a holiday, and tradesmen generally suspended work for the day. The programme was slightly altered from that of last year, but still equally as encouraging to professional athletes. The Brothers Anderson of Dundee were engaged for this occasion, and gave an exhibition of their marvellous gymnastic feats, consisting of fencing, Indian clubs, flying trapeze, flying rings, horizontal bar leaps in mid air, &c., at intervals. The day was all that could be desired for the occasion, and from the early morning the streets were thronged. At eleven o'clock the procession started from the Lodge-room, and preceeded by the volunteer band, they then marched to the South-end of the town through the principal streets. Here a bicycle race took place (open to all comers) for the championship of Galloway. There were nine entries, but only 6 competed. The first prize was a silver cup value £l 10s. Here an immense crowd had assembled, and a deal of speculation as to who would win. A very good start was made. The entire distance run was 4 miles, which was accomplished in about 14 minutes. W. L. Morris, Creetown, came in first, followed closely by W. H. Reid, Kilmarnock, and Wm. Kelly, Newton Stewart, third. The procession was again formed and marched in the same direction, then along the bridge to the Minnigaff side of the Cree to a field there, where the sports were held. The number of spectators in the field was roughly estimated between 1500 and 2000. The sum taken amounted to £35. The field was well adapted for the purpose; on a mound the spectators could sit and see everything that occurred. In the final tie at football four-aside, J. Stewart's team defeated W. McBratney's and won the handsome badges. Winning team—Messrs J. Stewart, W. Gordon, M. Scobie, and H. S. McLaughlin. In putting the ball and throwing the hammer M Kennedy, Glasgow, had no equal, his muscular strength being very apparent. The races were well contested, but the jumping calls for no special mention. First and second prizes for pole vaulting were divided between R. Bore-land, Kilbarchan, and R. Skinner, Kirkinner, 9ft. 6in. Mr Ross, gamekeeper, Penninghame, in Highland dancing, ghillie callum, and Highland fling, deservedly won first prize. The judges were Brothers Hillhouse and McFarlane; referee, Brother Purdie; starter, Brother Thorburn. Details -
