We regret to announce this week the death of two gentlemen well known in Galloway from their connection with it, and the prominent position they occupied. The first is Mr William Anderson, bookseller, of Newton-Stewart, a brother of Sir James Anderson, of Dumfries and London. Mr Anderson only began to complain of indisposition about a fortnight ago, and until a day or so of his death no serious result was anticipated. He died on Wednesday morning, and the news of his death was a shock to the whole community. He had been in business in this town for about 20 years, and was one of its most respected citizens. He was an elder of Penninghame Church in the affairs of which he took a great interest. He was continually on the qui vive for the good of the church, and its court has lost a most devoted servant, and the minister a valuable coadjutor. He was interred yesterday morning at Dumfries, the funeral party at Newton-Stewart consisting of his son as chief mourner Mr Robert Anderson, the Minister of Penningham (the Rev. Mr. Inglis), his fellow-elders, Messrs McGuffog, McArthur,McFadyean, and Stewart, and the various members of the deacons' court. There was also a large turn out of the general public. -The second gentleman whose sudden death will be heard of with regret, is Mr James Cowan of London, who was for so many years, joint manager of the National Bank of Scotland in London. His colleague, Mr Strachan was buried only a fortnight ago, and Mr Cowan attended his funeral little thinking that he would have to follow him so soon. Mr Cowan, it appears, burst a blood-vessel, and died immediately afterwards on Tuesday last. He was one of the founders of the London Galloway Association, and, was well known to and greatly respected and beloved, by all Gallovidians who went up to town. He has left a wife and young family for whom much sympathy is felt.
