PORTRAIT OP THE REV. M. S. S. JOHNSTONE.--The
portrait about to be presented by the congregation of Minnigaff to their pastor, Rev. M. S. S. Johnstone, has arrived. The work was executed by Sir Francis Grant, president of tho Royal Academy, and it must be very satisfactory to the committee to know that their work has been most successfully accomplished. It is said by some who are competent to judge that they do not recollect ever to have seen a finer portrait. It has not. yet been fixed when the presentation will take place.
J, P. Count-At a J. P. Court held in the Town Hall on Monday-Messrs Drew, Lees. and Jamieson, presiding-Andrew McGuigan, Newton-Stewart, pled not guilty through his agent (Mr Waugh, to the crime of assault committed on the person of John Dalrymple, shepherd, Kirkcowan, in -front of the Auction Mart on 15th December last. Several witnesses were examined, and the case was found proven. Before passing sentence Mr Waugh wished to explain that panel had been to Machermore to purchase a pig, and that Dalrymple had given his advice about it. They 'net at the
Mart, and had words, calling each other liars. He must admit that panel was first to strike, but the assault was a very slight one, and he felt sure the ends of justice would be amply met by inflicting as a fine the smallest coin of the realm. A fine of 5s was imposed, and a caution given to Dalrymple, its a case of breach of tho peace ought to have been brought against him. The Fiscal remarked that should such squabbles as this occur on market days again, he will have them brought up and prosecuted.
