The new school of Penninghame erected by the School Board to supersede the out one in Princes Street was formally opened on Tuesday in presence of the members of the School Board, parents of the children, and others. The school has been erected at a cast of £2200, and is capable of accommodating 133 pupils. James Drew, Esq., chairman of the Board, narrated the proceedings taken by the Board for its erection, and congratulated the parents and children on having such a handsome building erected for their accommodation. He concluded by stating that hitherto the Board had no enforced the compulsory clause of the Act., partly for want of accommodation, but now that sufficient accommodation has been supplied the Act will be enforced. He urged upon parents and guardians the necessity of sending the children to school and thus save the Board the disagreeable necessity of compelling them. Rev. Wm. McLean offered an appropriate and impressive prayer, after which the chairman declared the school open. Tho Beard met afterwards in an adjoining room, when after some preliminary business, Mr McLean moved that the gas for the new school buildings be supplied by the old gas company. Mr McEwen proposed the new company, when after a division Mr McLean's motion was carried by 4 to 3.
