New Year's Day was ushered in with the usual "fife and drum" procession, and a number of fantastically dressed men carrying blazing tar barrels paraded the streets from shortly after mid-night till 5 A.M, Divine service was held in three of the churches, but was thinly attended, the day being wet and disagreeable. In the evening a soiree was held in tho Albert Hall under the auspices of the Good Templars, when addreeses were delivered, and recitations given, songs, ducts, anthems, &c., were sung by the choir and individual members of it.
