CHURCH OF OUR LADY AND ST NINIANS.

This R.C. Church, which has been erected at a cost of £3000, and is built on the rising ground near to the Ewart institute, the foundation-stone of-which was laid last Christmas, is to be opened on Thursday (to-day). Solemn high mass coram pontiface is to be chanted by the Very Rev. J. McLachlan, D.D., Rector of St Peter's Diocesan Seminary Glasgow, and the dedication sermon is to be given by His Grace the Most Rev, Archbishop Eyre. The music (Polemanti and Weber) is to be rendered by members of the Dumfries choir, conducted by the Rev. P. Agnew. The entrance and grounds are very tastefully laid off. The entrance into the Church is a porch of open wood-work of a large pattern, open fret-work ornamental barge boarding. The belfry, rising 3 feet above the ridge of the building, is divided by two openings for bells, with a beautifully carved and polished medallion, above which, in the filling in below the main arch is a cupid cinque foil through opening, adding very much to the lightness and appearance of the structure. In the gables, north and south, are two large wheel windows, the one behind the altar filled in with beautiful stained glass, and forming a cinque foil window; the other is tilted in with stained tracery, forming three trefoils. The other windows are lancet shape. The nave of the Church measures 67 feet by 20 feet. The flooring is of highly ornamental encaustic tiles, laid on boarding. The Lady Chapel, and around the altar, is done in the same manner. The roof is formed in open wood work, in a very strong and substantial manner. The wails are limed 3½ feet high round and round, and finished with the best plaster up to the ceiling. The apexes of the gables are finished with ornamental terminals from McFarlan's Saracen Foundry, Glasgow, The architects are W. & R. Ingram, Glasgow; and the contractors, Messrs Wallace & Morgan, Coatbridge.
