NEWTON-STEWART
POLICE COMMISSION
A meeting of this body was held in the Town hall on Monday evening, where
an account for 12 guineas From Mr Stevenson Macadam, analytical chemist,
Edinburgh, for analysing four samples of water, was submitted, and ordered
to he paid. This. was done at the instance of Mr Thomson, whose belief
it was that the water was contaminated. The report
showed that the water was perfectly pure. It was agreed, upon application
by Mr. Drew, that a lamp be lighted between Ivy Place and Crosbie, on
condition that it he put down by those who would be most benefited by it.
t was also agreed to put down a lamp at the entrance gate to the cattle
pens at the Railway Station, provided the company place another on the
Bridge. It was further agreed to place a lamp at McLurg's barn; and the
commissioners were willing to light a lamp between the Auction Mart. and
Corvisel, should one he erected either by subscription or otherwise.
The Chairman was anxious that the town should he well lighted. A letter
was read from Mr Matthews, solicitor, on behalf of Mrs Galbraith,
Princes Street, complaining of an overflow by a drain in her property.
Mr Agnew explained that it was a stone-built drain, and that it had no
connection with the main sewer. The Chairman said that proprietors were
bound to carry their drains to the main sewer in fire-clay pipes, and
they must be compelled. There was no further business.
