OPENING OF THE NEW U.P. CHURCH.

This church which has been erected at a cost of £2,500 was formally opened on Thursday last, the preacher on the occasion being the Rev. Dr Logan Aikman of Glasgow. The design of the church is early English Gothic. it is built of whinstone, hammer-dressed and pointed with cement. The dressings are of white freestone from Prudham Quarry near Heehaw, broken up with redstone from Dumfries. The entrance to the church is by the east gable. At each side of the doorway are two unique windows which give light to the vestibule. The apexes of the gable have a massive freestone as a terminal. To the south of this gable is the spire, which rises to the height of 82 feet 6 inches. It Is square at base, supported by buttresses, but is splayed in and at about 30 feet up becomes octagonal, it is pierced in sides by narrow windows and openings, and is crowned with a hand. some gilt vane 0 feet high, Each side-wall is supported by 7 massive double splayed buttresses with windows between. The church is 57½ feet by 37 feet, with a gallery 31 feet by 11 feet, and is capable of accommodating 450 people. The ceiling is 32 feet high and is broken up by massive principal rafters. From the centre of the principals are hung stylish coronet gas lights, and between are three ventilating perforated openings with covers and wire cords, all of which are opened or shut from gallery. The whole inside woodwork is of pitch pine varnished. The pews are all open and are of extra width with sloping hacks, which make them easy and comfortable. The pulpit is exceedingly simple and effective, - the front of it being broken up by moulded shafts and cusped moulded arches, the book board being covered with red cloth, the back of seat being stuffed with a similar material. At each side of the pulpit is a door lending into the class-room and vestry, the former 25 feet by 21 feet 6 in., the latter 13 feet by 10 feet. Comunication can be had from the class-room to the vestry without entering the church. The roofs are high pitched and covered with blue Welsh slates broken up with bands of green end gable ventilators with cast-iron finials. The architect was Mr R. Park, Newton-Stewart. The contractors, Messrs T, & J. Agnew, Newton-Stewart; joiner work, Mr .J, H, Galbraith, Irvine ; plumber and gas fitter work, Messrs Moffitt, Newton-Stewart; plaster work, ,Mr James Torrance, Stranraer; and for heating, Mr John Hay, Glasgow, A soiree was held in the Vic-Morin Ilan in the evening, when the Rev. E. Smith, pastor, was presented in name of the ladies of the congregation with a pulpit gown and cassock with bands and gloves. Services were conducted in the now church on Sabbath morning and evening by the Rev. William Graham, Liverpool, and in the afternoon by the Rev. E. Smith. The total collection amounted to £35. We understand the church is now clear of debt.
