SHEVIOCK is a small parish, in the east division of the County, Union of St. Germans, 5 miles from Torpoint, 6 miles from Devonport, and 31/2 from St. Germans. The church, dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, is an old building, with a spire and 2 bells; it originally consisted of a chancel and sancrarium, nave (with tower and spire at the west end), and north and south transepts ; the north transept has been removed to make way for a perpendicular aisle. The tower is slight, and has no turret stairs; the spire, having had its top shortened in repairing it, has lost somewhat of its former beauty.
In the south transept is a beautiful monument of the latter part of the fourteenth century, representing Sir Edward Courtenay, third sun of Henry Earl of Devon and Emmeline, his wife, daughter and heiress, of Sir Nicholas Dawnay. The restoration of the hurch has been confined to the chancel, which has 3 stained windows. The floor is paved with encaustic tiles of different degrees of richness: The altar with super-alter is of oak. The roof is of oak and the walls are decorated with pictures in medallions from scripture subjects. There are three plain sedilia, a credence table, and good piscine in the chancel, as well as another piscinain the transcept. The living is a rectory, value about, £400 in the gift of W. H. P. Carew, Esq., and Incumbency of the Rev. H Carew Granvile. Here is a Wesleyan chapel and a National school. The population in 1851, was, 573; acreage 2,###.
