TORPOINT is a small neat town and chapelry, in the parish of Antony St. Jacob, nearly the whole of which has been built since 1700; it is situated on the west bank of that part of the river Tamar, called Hamoaze, directly opposite the new steamyard at Keyham, Devonport; the river in this part being nearly three quarters of a mile wide, the communication is by a floating steam bridge, which crosses every quarter of an hour; it is about 21/2 miles from the Plymouth station of the South Devon railway, and at present forms the high road into Cornwall; it contains about 2,000 inhabitants, consisting principally of retired naval officers-the families of such as are actively engaged in the naval service, and those employed in the different government establishments on the opposite side of the river. The only manufactories are sulphuric acid and manure manufactory recently established by Messrs. Eastcott and Shepheard, and a rope manufactory carried on by Mr. Ellis; there are no fairs or markets, but the town is well supplied with meat, fish, and vegetables. The parish church is situated in the village of Antony, about 3 miles from Torpoint. The living is a vicarage, in the gift of W. H. Pole Carew, Esq.; the present incumbent is the Rev. J. F. Kitson, MA. In Torpoint there is a chapel of ease, of which the Rev. R. Dunning, M.A., is incumbent, and chapels belonging to the Independents and Wesleyans. There is a National school for boys, of which Mr. J. Clegg is master; and for girls, of which Miss Dawe is the mistress. The institution for the promotion of scientific and useful knowledge, in which there is a large lecture room, with class and reading rooms, is a very respectable building. There are gas works from which the shops and public buildings are lighted, but the inhabitants have not yet availed themselves of its use for street lamps. The workhouse for the St. Germans Union is situated about a quarter of a mile from Torpoint, where are held the petty sessions for the southern division of the Hundred of East. Antony House, on the banks of the Lynher, about 2 miles from Torpoint, is a handsome building In the Elizabethan style; the grounds around being beautifully wooded.
ANTONY CHURCH is about 3 miles from Devonport. The architecture may be ascribed to the early part of the fifteenth century. The church consists of a nave, chancel, and sacrarium. Little of the original fittings of the church remain. In the chancel is a brass to the memory of Margery Arundel, the foundries of the Church. At the head of the stone containing the brass are the matrices of two, shields, one archdekne, argent, three chevronels, sable; the other Arundel, sable, six martlets, three, two, and one argent. At the foot is the inscription:-" Hic jacet Margeria Arundell, quondam domina de est Anthony, filia Ularini Erchedeken militis, quae obitt 26 die Octobris, A.D. 1420. Cujus animas propicietur Deus." Five stained glass windows have been recently inserted in the north aisle; the east window of the chancel contains some fragments of modern and mediaeval glass; the ancient fragments exhibit the Tudor rose, the wafer, and chalice. The only monument of interest is that erected to Richard Carew, the historian of Cornwall, who died in 1620.
