TORPOINT, a small town, nearly the whole of which has been built since 1790, is within the civil parish of Antony, in the South Eastern division of the county, petty sessional division of the South Division of the hundred of East Cornwall, union of St. Germans, county court district of East Stonehouse, rural deanery of East, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro, and was formed into a separate ecclesiastical parish, Jan. 17, 1873: it is on the west bank of that part of the river Tamar called "Hamoaze," directly opposite the dockyard at Devonport: the river in this part, is nearly three-quarters of a mile wide, communication with either side being maintained by a floating steam bridge, established in 1835, which leaves Torpoint at the hours and half hours, and Morice Town at a quarter before and a quarter after each hour; Torpoint is about 2½ miles west from the Plymouth station of the Great Western railway, opened in 1859, and has since 1884 been lighted with gas by a Company and supplied with water by the Torpoint Water Works, who obtain their supply from springs gathered at Crafthole, in the parish of Sheviock, 5½ miles from Torpoint ; the works were erected in 1887 by the St. Germans Union Rural Sanitary Authority at a cost of £8,500 inclusive of filter beds; the storage reservoir holds 6,000,000 gallons and the pure water basin at filter beds 150,000 gallons. The church of St. James, in the middle of the town, was erected in 1819, and is a plain building of stone, consisting of chancel and nave and a western turret, containing a clock and one bell: the chancel, added in 1885, is in the Early English style: the pulpit is of cedar, beautifully carved by Mrs. Kerwan, of St. Johns: there is a monument in the Church to Joshua Rowe esq. (d. 1827), as well as to others of this family, including his son, Sir Joshua Rowe C.B. Chief Justice of Jamaica: there are 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1819. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £20, net yearly value £12 0, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Antony, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Frederick Campbell Cardew M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. There are Congregational, Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels. The work-house for St. German's Union is about a quarter of a mile from Torpoint. There are no fairs or markets, but the town is well supplied with meat, fish and vegetables. There is the sulphuric acid and manure manufactory of the Western Counties and General Manure Company Limited. The Working Men's Club and Institute contains a large lecture room and class and reading rooms. Gravesend, the property of Lord Graves, is now occupied by Major De La Poer Beresford. Colonel Reginald Pole-Carew C.B. of Antony House, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is loamy; subsoil, slate rock. The area of the parish is 1,900 acres; rateable value, £3,946; the population in 1891 was 2,425, including the officers and inmates of St. Germans Workhouse.
