COBURN LANDS
As described by Donald Coburn in his book My Line
Over the generations land changed hands many times with resulting changes
in bounds. I suppose the Coburn land changes are little different than in other
families.
Land transactions as recorded, starting in 1806:
1806 David Coburn bought from Benjamin and Jane Sloot the mid section of the Eli Benedict grant north of the Keswick Ridge road for £60.
1808 David Coburn bought from the Barker family the central portion, fronting on the Keswick Ridge road, of lots 25 and 26, the MacFarland grant.
1823, David Coburn gave son Abraham Tyler Coburn a strip 45 rods wide off the east side of the Benedict grant #27. Grant #27 was 90 rods wide along the Keswick Ridge road but narrowed toward the north.
1829 David Coburn died without a will. There were eight heirs. Sons David and Thomas shared in division of the land. 12 Nov. 1829 David’s widow, Mary Christie, along with son Abraham Tyler and Son-in-law Joseph Pickard were named administrators of the estate.
13 March 1832 David Coburn paid Nathaniel and Deborah (Coburn) Perley £50 for their claim on the land.
6 Apr. 1832 David Coburn paid Abraham Tyler Coburn £5 for one half of his claim. 1833 David Coburn m. Sarah Sloot.
1835 Mary (Christie) Coburn widow of David died.
1836 David Coburn paid Abraham T. £60 for the balance of his claim.
1850 Thomas Coburn reached majority and must have gotten title to lot 25 of the MacFarland grant.
13 Nov. 1850 David deeded his land for £50 to his four sons dividing it - starting on the east side fronting on the Keswick Ridge road. Tyler got 22½ rods width, William 22½ rods, Benjamin 22½ rods and Charles 22½ rods.
1851 The four brothers paid Moses C. Pickard £60 for his mother Elizabeth’s share in the estate of David. Elizabeth had died in 1834.
1853 The four brothers also paid David and Phoebe (Pickard) Currie £10 on the same claim. Phoebe was a daughter of Elizabeth.
2 Oct. 1863 Tyler and William bought brother Benjamin's lot for £90.
10 Sept. 1866 Tyler bought Charles lot.
22 Sept. 1866 Tyler sold his lot to William for $400.00.
Sept. 1866 William and Emeline sold to Tyler for $200.00 the eastern half of the former Benjamin lot.
As Charles portion was the last division of Davids’ land, it was the lot that tapered toward the north end. It is the mid section of my farm and was the location of the ancient house where James Pickard was born in 1793 and was later, quite likely, the fi rst home of the David5 Coburn family when they came to Kesway Ridge. West of that strip I own the eastern half of lot 25 and east of the Charles portion, I own the 22½ rod strip formerly owned by Benjamin. My home is located there on the eastern section of lot 26 of the MacFarland grant plus a sliver of the Benedict grant. Further north my eastern side line crosses the Benedict line and yields a slim triangle of lot 26 to the present David Coburn property. Such was the evolution of the Fred Coburn place.
In 2000 David Coburn purchased Donald Coburn's Farm, thereby reuniting the pieces which had been split following the death of his predecessor David Coburn in 1829
